For Parents

1.) One way to make your dreams come true is to start helping others make their dreams come true.  What you give, you often recieve back tenfold.  One activity is to donate to a favorite charity.  Listed below are three of our favorites because they give helping hands and not just handouts.  Their effects are felt long after the gift has been given.

Kiva.org- Kiva lets you lend money to a specific entrepreneur, empowering them to lift themselves out of poverty. They repay your account and you can lend that same amount out to someone else.

The International Medical Corp - Provides medical care to crisis areas around the world. IMCworldwide.org gives local people the tools and knowledge to help themselves. Investments are sustained beyond the crisis they respond to.

City Year - Cityyear.org unites young people of all backgrounds for a year of full-time service, giving them the skills and opportunities to change the world. As tutors, mentors and role models, these young leaders make a difference in the lives of children, and transform schools and neighborhoods.

2.) There is some very interesting work being done on how our thoughts effect our reality.  Lynne McTaggart author of The Field, and an internationally recognized spokesperson on the science of spirituality also has a website called The Intention Experiment where she runs experiments that you can participate in.  See if your thoughts can actually change our physical reality.  Click the link below to find out more.

Go to The Intention Experiment.

3.) Go on a family vacation.  Whether it is across the country or right in your own backyard, every family needs to explore this world together.  Dream up a new place your family has never been and go.  What are you waiting for?  For some vacation ideas you can check out FamilyVacationCritic.com.

4.) Visualization/Meditation: In addition to the documented health benefits of relieving stress, visualization and meditation techniques are powerful tools towards manifesting your dreams.  You don't have to think of it as some "Eastern" or mystical or religious experience if you don't want to.  Rather just think of it as structured daydreaming.  Seeing yourself accomplishing your dream in your mind is half the battle to achieving success.  The other half, of course, is actually putting the images into action.  Search the web for reccomendations on different visualization/meditation techniques and just use the one that works for you.

5.) Do a Career Inventory.  Are you satisfied with your current job situation?  Is it time to switch jobs, switch careers, or just switch your approach to the job you are in?  Reassess your career goals and don't be afraid to follow your heart and your true dream.

6.)  Volunteer for something.  There are hundreds of community projects available to participate in and give something back to the community.  You could even use this opportunity to explore something else you are interested in or to network with people related to your field and interests, all in the name of doing something good for the community.  It is a win-win for you and the organization or people you choose to help out.  Whether it is for one day or a prolonged committment, the experience can be quite rewarding.

7.)  Make your own dream board.  Check out the page "Create Your Own Dream Board" for suggestions and ideas.

For Children

1.) Inspire your children to write their own story.  Even if they are too young to write, you can encourage them to make up a story and write it down for them.  This is a good project to discover the imaginings and dreams of your child.  You can even bind it and save it as a real book that they have written.  One product that can assist you in this endeavor is an Illustory: Make your own story kit.  After creating their own story, your child can mail their creation out and it will be returned back to them as a real hardcover quality book they can cherish for years. Just check out the link below.

2.)  Plan a treasure hunt!  Parents can plan one for their children or children can map one out for their parents.  This activity can be as simple as finding something hidden inside the house or searching for something hidden inside your state.  Be sure to draw a map, or hide clues in multiple locations leading to the buried or visible treasure of your choice.  Be creative.  You can even use GPS coordinates for the high tech explorer.

3.) Dream up some fun with your food!  Be creative and build something out of your breakfast, lunch, or dinner.  Don't just copy some design out of a book.  Add your own twist.  Invent your own design to make your food a work of art.  One of my son's favorites is waffle stadium with an egg field and bacon endzones. It doesn't have to be pretty to be entertaining.  Just have fun with it.

4.) Make your dreams explode with a science experiment.  Children can experience the magical inside very ordinary things when performing simple science experiments. For example, baking soda and vinegar is one safe chemical reaction that produces explosive results.  There are many books that follow this theme such as The Everything Kids Magical Science Experiments Book. You could even invest in a simple science kit such as the Scientific Explorer's Mind Blowing Science Kit seen below.

5.) Throw an Unbirthday Party just like in Alice in Wonderland!  Throw a party for no particular reason at all!  Dream up a theme or none at all and invite all your friends over just because their your friends and you needed an excuse for ice cream and cake.  No presents needed, just fun!

6.) Give your old toys and clothes away!  This is an opportunity for children to do an inventory on what still interests and inspires them while providing those with need at the same time.  It also gives children the chance to feel like they are making a difference in someone's life by providing them with clothes or toys that others may never have gotten without their help.  And for parents it is the opportunity to decrease the clutter and trip hazards around the house.  So go ahead and give some stuff away, then watch how much more stuff comes back into your house to replace it anyway.

7.)  Make your own dream board.  Check out the page "Create Your Own Dream Board" for suggestions and ideas.
